This was the year the league grew up a little. Legacy member Derek Burns went out and purchased an actual winner's trophy and an actual loser's trophy, had every previous champion's name engraved on the winner's, and established two new traditions: the engraving fee comes out of first place's payout going forward, and whoever finishes last has to plan the end-of-season awards banquet where the trophies get passed. The league now has hardware. The stakes just got physical.
Matthew Beyer claimed that hardware in 2019, winning his first championship as the 6-seed with a 7-6 record, outscored on the season, and apparently unbothered by any of it. He beat Dennis Lynn 135.18-87.62 in the title game, a margin that was not close, in a game that ended Dennis Lynn's otherwise outstanding season on the worst possible note.
Dennis Lynn was the regular season champ. Dennis Lynn led the league in scoring with 1,760 points. Dennis Lynn went 10-3, the best record in the league. Dennis Lynn finished runner-up. At this point the regular season title is just a curse in a different font.
Derek Burns, in his third consecutive deep postseason run, finished 3rd after back-to-back runner-up finishes in 2017 and 2018. Three straight years of being the nearly guy. Two lost championship games, one 3rd place consolation prize. The man bought the trophy with his own money and still can't get his name on it.
Scott Langer, the 2016 champion, finished last at 3-10. His prize: planning and hosting the inaugural awards banquet for the trophy ceremony. The bracket giveth a championship in 2016, and it taketh away a catering bill in 2019.
