2011 SEASON

The Recap

The league came to its senses. Fourteen teams became twelve, two unfortunate souls were shown the door, and as a parting gift the scoring switched to PPR. New era, new record books, clean slate for everyone. Ryan Wingerson used that clean slate to immediately write his name all over everything in permanent marker.

Regular season champ. Regular season high scorer. Season high single-week score of 186.08 in Week 8. Season's biggest blowout, also Week 8, also Ryan, a 108-point annihilation of Jarod Hilmer that technically counted as a fantasy matchup but felt more like a crime scene. And then, in case anyone thought the playoffs might humble him, he went out and won the championship too, beating Matthew Beyer 172-110.78 in a game that was over before halftime. Best record, most points, biggest score, biggest blowout, championship. Ryan Wingerson did not come to share. He came to collect.

Jarod Hilmer, who had the distinct pleasure of being the guy Ryan chose to make an example of in Week 8, took a 108-point loss personally and finished the year 8th. Sometimes the league just picks somebody to bully and that's you.

Michael (Wheels of Steel) Johnson had the 3rd best regular season record at 9-5 and still couldn't crack the top four in the final standings, finishing 5th. Wheels of Steel, more like wheels coming off. He did manage to beat Derek Hilmer by 0.12 points in Week 5 though, which is the kind of victory that has to carry you all the way to the offseason because the playoffs sure aren't going to.

Derek, for his part, lost that 0.12-point heartbreaker, then lost the 3rd place game on top of it. Twelve hundredths of a point in Week 5 basically set the tone for his entire postseason, which is a level of cosmic punishment usually reserved for people who do something genuinely wrong.

And at the bottom, Paul Loveland put up a 47.26 in Week 11 to christen the PPR era's first true disaster score. Welcome to the future, Paul. It's not going great for you.
