The league fee jumped from $30 to $50 this year, because apparently suffering should cost more. The good news: the money was worth it. The bad news: only if you were Bernard Lynn.
Bernard ran the table in 2013 the way you're supposed to but almost never do. Regular season champ, regular season high scorer, and then he went ahead and won the whole thing too, beating Derek Hilmer 125.46-113.94 in the championship. No irony, no asterisk, no heartbreaking playoff collapse. Just a guy who was the best team in the league and finished first. It happens occasionally in this league, even if it doesn't feel like it.
Week 4 deserves its own paragraph. Derek Burns, in the same season he'd finish 10th, somehow put up 201.88 points, the highest single-week score of the entire year, and buried Matthew Beyer 201.88-80.14 in the biggest blowout of the season. In that exact same week, new member Jeft Cavey posted a 40.98, the lowest score of the year, against Andrew Vinz. Week 4 was a full league experience compressed into seven days: the sublime, the catastrophic, and everything in between.
Speaking of Jeft Cavey, welcome to the league. His debut season went 2-12, good for last place, and included the season's worst single-game performance. The initiation in this league has never been gentle, but Jeft got a particularly unambiguous introduction. He lost to Dennis Lynn by 0.32 points in Week 5, just to make sure he understood that there would be no mercy here either.
Andrew Vinz, defending champion, went 9-5 and finished 5th. Ryan Wingerson went 8-6 and finished 7th. The bracket remains indifferent to your credentials.
