2010 SEASON

The Recap

Year two, and someone decided the league needed more bodies. Fourteen teams. Fourteen. The kind of decision that sounds fine in a group chat at 11pm and looks catastrophic by Week 3. This is widely regarded as the worst administrative decision in league history, and the 2010 season did nothing to argue otherwise.

Let's talk about Casey Arneson, who went 13-1 in a 14-team league. Thirteen wins in fourteen games, a scoring differential that should be illegal, the single greatest regular season this league had ever witnessed. And it got him a 5th-place finish and a one-way ticket to the "what could've been" wing of the Hall of Fame. The playoffs don't care about your résumé. They never have, they never will, and Casey found that out the hard way.

Meanwhile the actual championship was decided by a game so ugly it should've come with a warning label: Derek Hilmer over Phil Hoops, 58-57. One point. ONE. A single point separating a championship ring from a lifetime of "well, actually I was right there." Somewhere, Casey Arneson watched two teams combine for fewer points than he scored by himself most weeks and had to sit with the fact that this, THIS, is what kept him out of the title game.

And Derek's road to that trophy? Not exactly paved in glory. Two weeks before he's hoisting the championship, he drops an 18. Eighteen. Points. Matthew Beyer steamrolled him 81-18 and probably didn't even break a sweat doing it. Somehow Derek still ended up champion. Fantasy football makes no sense and never will.

Then there's Phillip Redenius, who finished the year 1-13, an offense to football, an offense to fantasy, an offense to the very concept of competition, and closed it out by getting absolutely demolished 100-19 by Casey Arneson in Week 14. Casey couldn't win when it counted, but he could sure as hell make Phillip Redenius regret existing for one Sunday.

And down in the trenches, Wesley Hoops and Paul Loveland clawed their way to a screeching 68-67 finish in Week 8, proof that even the league's bottom-feeders can occasionally remember how to play football. The 14-team experiment limped to a close, and everyone quietly agreed never to speak of it again.
