No rule changes this year. Just the slow, inexorable turning of the wheel of fantasy football karma, which in 2024 pointed directly at Phillip Redenius and said: your time.
Phillip Redenius. Champion. Take a moment. This is the man who went 1-13 in 2010, who owns the longest losing streak in league history at 18 consecutive losses, who has finished last more times than most people care to count, who has planned more banquets than a hotel catering manager. He went 8-6 as the 2-seed, beat Paul Loveland 137.32-95.98 in the championship, led the league in scoring all season with 1,788 points, and walked out with the trophy that has everyone else's name on it. Phillip Redenius has his name on the trophy now. In ink, not pencil.
Dennis Lynn went 9-5, won the regular season title, and finished 3rd. A solid result, but this is 2024 and the story belongs to Phillip.
Paul Loveland, runner-up for the second time, continues his pattern of getting tantalizingly close and coming up short. Matthew Beyer led the league in scoring for what feels like the hundredth time and finished 4th. Andrew Vinz, the defending champion, finished 10th. Derek Hilmer finished last at 5-9, which deserves a footnote: it's the best record in league history to still finish dead last. Five wins and he's still planning the banquet. That's not bad luck, that's a scheduling problem, and also Derek Hilmer's 2024 season in one sentence.
And somewhere, in the back of the room at that banquet, there is a man who has spent fifteen years being the butt of the joke, holding a winner's trophy with his name on it, and not saying a word. He doesn't need to.
